A crew commander and his gunner sit relaxing on top of their light armoured vehicle waiting and listening on their radio for the departure command at a forward operating base in Kandahar District before the start of Operation ROOB UNYIP JANUBI. In August 2008, Task Force Kandahar, in partnership with the Afghan National Security Forces and in concert with the Reserve Battle Group (South) and Task Force Helmand, conducted deliberate operations in Band-E-Timor and Maywand District in order to establish enduring security in these areas. This operation, called Operation ROOB UNYIP JANUBI or ‘Southern Beast’ in Pashto, was aimed at disrupting insurgent activities in this area, which is known to be an important insurgent logistical node. Corporal Justin Holmstead, a member of the Canadian Forces Land Advance Warfare Centre, makes his way through the deep snow after parachuting in with his team. The team is responsible for setting up a major air disaster kit during Canadian Forces Exercise TRILLIUM RESPONSE near Cochrane, Ontario.
Land Force Central Area (LFCA) is the Canadian Army in Ontario. The mission of LFCA is to generate and maintain, at designated states of readiness, combat capable, multi-purpose Land Forces to meet Canada’s defence objectives, both at home and abroad.
Each year, JTFC along with partner government agencies, conducts a major field training exercise in the province of Ontario to test its ability to provide military assistance to civil authorities. Named the TRILLIUM RESPONSE series of exercises, these address a range of scenarios under varying environmental conditions. Exercise TRILLIUM RESPONSE 2012 provides a realistic and challenging scenario for the soldiers and air crews of JTFC, while testing JTFC’s command and control in a partnered domestic response. The exercise revolves around reported aircraft crashes outside of Cochrane in the Mistango Lake area, and northwest of Hearst near Constance Lake.
